This is an industry led Not-for-profit society formed to respond to oil spills in Kenyan waters. We boast of over 140 members as at December 2021. Apart from international/ national/independent oil companies, we have an oil pipeline operator, a power producer, an upstream oil exploration company and a railways operator as members

THE JOURNEY
Oil Spill Mutual Aid Group (OSMAG) is a Society established in Kenya by responsible firms to establish preparedness and response capacity to members tier 2 spills. It was established in 1992 by seven founding members as the National Oil Spill Response Committee and the name later changed to Oil Spill Mutual Aid Group (OSMAG) in 1999.

The organization was formed after the coming in force of the international convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation, 1990 (OPRC 90) which was necessitated by a series of international oil spills topped by the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill in 1989.

The IMO OPRC 90 convention spells out response mechanisms and fosters cooperation. OSMAG therefore is aimed at establishing a response capacity in Kenya and lays down rules of engagement during cooperation.

The organization has operated based on the OSMAG agreement among the participating members since inception. This was until 2012 when registration as a society was done in order to achieve its objectives more effectively

OSMAG ADMINISTRATION
OSMAG is administered at two levels by the executive and working committees respectively. The executive committee consists of CEOs of member companies who elect the chairman and secretary rotationally every two years. The working committee consists of appointees of the member companies who are mainly staff in charge of HSE.
